Trey Gowdy: “May Justice Be Done, Though the Heavens Fall”

In a stinging rebuke to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.) launched an editorial in USA Today with two words: “Benghazi matters.”

Gowdy, who House Speaker John Boehner named to chair a select committee to investigate the Sept. 11, 2012 terrorist attack in Libya, is clearly taking a shot at Clinton’s famous response to questioning with “What difference does it make?

Gowdy’s op-ed shows convincingly why it matters. Four Americans were murdered. An American diplomatic facility, essentially a piece of American soil, was attacked and destroyed. Finally, Americans deserve to know the full truth.

Gowdy also gave a clear warning what he wants the committee to find out, also bad news for Clinton. People on the ground in Libya pleaded for additional security yet security was not only not increased, the request was pointedly turned down.

What is the truth about the Obama administration’s confusing responses, including responses from Clinton, in the aftermath?

Administration officials repeatedly referred to the terrorist attack as a mob’s spontaneous response to a YouTube video that angered some Muslims.

From USAToday:

There are still witnesses whose testimony has not been heard. Just last week, we learned the administration has withheld relevant documents from Congress, despite a subpoena request. Some produced documents are so heavily redacted as to be meaningless. The select committee should strive to uncover every relevant witness, document or other piece of evidence so our fellow citizens can know the facts and the full truth.

Gowdy makes a reasoned argument as to why Americans should want to see this committee do its work.

Facts are neither Republican nor Democrat. While our fellow citizens are free to draw varying conclusions and inferences from the facts, surely there can be consensus that every relevant fact must be uncovered.

Gowdy, a former federal prosecutor, ends his editorial with the stirring use of the Latin phrase: “May justice be done, thought the heavens fall.” Democrats hoping for a quick end to the Benghazi issue should take note. He’s not going to rest until he gets closure for the victims’ families and finally holds this criminal Administration accountable for their lies and negligence, even if he has to subpoena the President himself.
