BREAKING: Obama Knew of VA Scandal Since 2008… Did Nothing

safe_imageAfter the recent Veterans Administration scandal broke into the news, President Obama stated he was “madder than hell.” Now, we know he should have been mad at himself.

Of course, the VA scandal is not the first scandal to rock the White House. And, it is not the first to bring charges of incompetence against the Obama Administration. (Just look at what happened with Benghazi and the rollout of Obamacare.)

Yet, it is rare that we have such concrete evidence so quickly after the scandal. We now know for sure that this tragedy (in which reportedly 40 veterans died while on wait lists) goes straight to the top.

As the Washington Times reports, when Obama was preparing to transition into office in 2008, he was briefed on the status of the federal departments and programs he would be leading. This briefing included “clear notice…that VA medical facilities were reporting inaccurate waiting times and experiencing scheduling failures that threatened to deny veterans timely health care.”

The briefing materials, obtained by The Washington Times through the Freedom of Information Act, make clear that the problems existed well before Mr. Obama took office, dating back at least to the Bush administration. But the materials raise questions about what actions the department took since 2009 to remedy the problems.
The briefings did not mention mere discrepancies, but rather indicated that both data integrity and the quality of care were compromised:
“This is not only a data integrity issue in which [Veterans Health Administration] reports unreliable performance data; it affects quality of care by delaying — and potentially denying — deserving veterans timely care,” the officials wrote.
Further, Obama was not left without possible remedies:
In particular, the 2008 transition report referred to a VA inspector general recommendation to test the accuracy of reported waiting times.
However, it is unknown whether Obama followed up on this recommendation.

This is a horrible tragedy. Our veterans risked their lives to defend our freedoms, yet they were disgracefully denied much needed healthcare. (As a side note: this is why we don’t want government in charge of everyone’s healthcare!)

The full extent of this scandal must be known, and the Bush Administration must not be exempt from any investigation. However, this much is known: Obama knew about it from the beginning of his presidency, and he apparently did nothing.
